Bhar do Jholi

Sabri Brothers

Shah-e-Madina suno, iltija Khuda ke liye
Karam ho mujh pe, Habeeb-e-Khuda, Khuda ke liye.
Huzoor ghuncha-e-ummid ab to khil jaye
Tumhare dar ka gada hoon, to bheek mil jaye.

King of Medina listen to my plea, in God’s name
Grant your favor to me, Beloved of God, in God’s name
May the flowers of hope now bloom
I am the pauper at your door, asking for alms.

Bhar do jholi meri, ya Mohammad
Laut kar main na jaaoongi khali.

Grant me your favors, O Mohammad
I will not leave empty-handed.

These two lines form the refrain, they are repeated many times in the qawwali. Literally, “jholi” is the corner of one’s shirt or garment that you can spread and hold out to receive something. Bhar do jholi means “fill my jholi”, grant as many alms and favors as one can hold.

Tumharey aastaney se zamana kya nahin paata
Koi bhi dar se khali maangney wala nahim jata.

What is there that the world doesn’t receive at your doorstep?
No supplicant leaves your door empty-handed.

Bhar do jholi meri, ya Mohammad

You are the chosen one of this age, O Nabi
You are the helper of the friendless, O Nabi
You hear everyone, whether your own or strangers
You comfort the poor, O Nabi.

Bhar do jholi meri, ya Mohammad
Laut kar main na jaaoongi khali.

Hum hain ranj-o-museebat ke marey huey
Sakht mushkil mein hain, ghum sey haarey huey
Ya Nabi, kuch khudara hamein bheek do
Dar pey aaye hain jholi pasaarey huey.

I am stricken by grief and hardship
In great difficulties, defeated by sorrow
Grant me your favor, O Nabi
I am at your door asking for alms.

Bhar do jholi meri, ya Mohammad
Laut kar main na jaaoongi khali.

Hai mukhalif zamana, kidhar jayein hum
Haalat-e-bekasi kis ko dikhlayein hu
Hum tumharey bhikari hain ya Mustafa
Kis key aagey bhala haath phailayein hum

The times are against me, where would I go?
Who would see my helplessness?
I am your supplicant, O Mustafa
Who else could I go to for help?

Bhar do jholi meri, ya Mohammad
Laut kar main na jaaoongi khali.

Kuch nawason ka sadaqa ataa ho
Dar pe aayi hun ban kar sawali.

Let me gain from your grandsons’ charity
I am at your door as a supplicant.

Aashiq-e-Mustafa ki azaan mein
Allah, Allah haan kitna asar tha

The call to prayer from the adorer of Mustafa
How amazing was its power!

Sachcha yeh vaqayah hai azaan-e-Bilal ka
Ek din Rasool-e-Paak sey logon ney yoon kaha
Ya Mustafa, azaan ghalat detey hain Bilal
Kahiye Huzoor aap ka is mey hai kya khayal?

This is a true story about Bilal’s call to prayer
One day people said to the Holy Prophet
O Mustafa, Bilal recites the call to prayer incorrectly
Tell us, what is your thought on this matter?

Farmaya Mustafa ne ye sach hai to dekhiye
Waqt-e-sahar ki aaj azaan aur koi de.

Mustafa declared: Let’s see if this is true
Let someone else do the call to prayers at dawn.

Hazrat Bilal ne jo azaan-e-sahar na di
Qudrat Khuda ki dekho, na mutlak sahar hui

As Bilal did not recite the dawn call to prayer
Behold God’s glory – the sun did not rise.

Aaye Nabi ke paas phir as’haab-e ba-safa
Ki arz Mustafa se ke ya Shah-e-Ambiya
Hai kya sabab sahar na hui aaj Mustafa?
Jibraeel laaye aisey mein paigham-e-kibriya

Some of the companions went to the Prophet
And said: O King of Prophets
Why did the sun not rise today, O Mustafa?
Just then, Gabriel brought a message from God.

Pehley to Mustafa ko adab se kiya salam
Baad az salam un ko Khuda ka diya payam
Yoon Jibraeel ne kaha Khair-ul-Anaam se
Allah ko hai pyar tumharey ghulam se

First, he greeted Mustafa respectfully
And then gave him God’s message:
Gabriel said, to the best of God’s creations
God loves your slave! (Bilal)

Farma raha hai aap se ye Rabb-e-Zul Jalal
Hogi na sub’ha deinge na jab tak azaan Bilal.

The Lord of all Creation says to you:
The sun will not rise until Bilal recites the call to prayer.

Aashiq-e-Mustafa ki azaan mein
Allah, Allah haan kitna asar tha
Arsh-waley bhi suntey they jis ko
Kya azaan thi azaan-e-Bilali.

The call to prayer from the adorer of Mustafa
How amazing was its power!
Even God and the angels in heaven listened to it
How wonderful was Bilal’s call to prayer!

Zindagi bakhsh di bandagi ko
Aabaroo deen-e-Haq ki bacha li

He sacrificed his life in God’s worship
And saved the honor of his religion.

Jo ibn-e-Murtaza ne kiya kaam khoob hai
Qurbani-e-Hussain ka anjaam khoob hai.
Qurban ho ke Fatima Zehra ke chain ne
Deen-e-Khuda ki shaan barhai Hussain ne.

The deed done by Murtaza’s son is excellent
There is virtue in Hussain’s sacrifice
By sacrificing himself, Hussain, the comfort of Fatima Zehra
Increased the glory of the religion of God.

Bakhshi hai jis ne mazhab-e-Islam ko hayat
Kitni azeem Hazrat-e-Shabbir ki hai zaat.
Maidan-e-Karbala mein Shah-e-Khush Khisal ne
Sajdey mein sar kata ke Mohammad ke laal ne.

He is the one who gave his life to the religion of Islam
How great the rank of Shabbir!
In the battlefield at Karbala, the king of virtue
The beloved of Mohammad – offered his neck in sacrifice.

Zindagi bakhsh di bandagi ko
Aabaroo deen-e-Haq ki bacha li
Vo Mohammad ka pyara nawasa
Jis ne sajdey mein gardan kata li.

He sacrificed his life in God’s worship
And saved the honor of his religion.
That beloved grandson of Mohammad
Who was beheaded while prostrating himself to God.

Hashr mein un ko dekhenge jis dam
Ummati ye kahenge khushi se
Aa rahey hain vo dekho Mohammad
Jin ke kaandhey pe kamali hai kali.

On the day of judgment, when they see Him
His followers will happily say
Look, Mohammad is coming
With the black shawl on his shoulder.

Mehshar ke roz pesh-e-Khuda hongey jis ghari
Hogi gunahgaron mein is darja be-kali.
Aatey huey Nabi ko jo dekhenge ummati
Ek doosrey se sab ye kahenge khushi khushi..

On Judgement day when they appear before God
There will be great unease among the sinners
But they will see the Prophet coming
And will happily tell each other..

Aa rahey hain vo dekho Mohammad
Jin ke kaandhey pe kamali hai kali.

Look, Mohammad is coming
With the black shawl on his shoulder.

Saar-e-mehshar gunahgaron se pursish jis ghari hogi
Yaqeenan har bashar ko apni bakhshish ki pari hogi
Sabhi ko aas us dam kamali waley se lagi hogi
Ke aisey mein Mohammad ki sawari aa rahi hogi.

On Judgement Day when the sinners are questioned
Truly, everyone will be preoccupied with his own pardon
Every one will place their hopes on the one with the black shawl
And Mohammad’s procession will then arrive.

Pukarega zamana us ghari, dukh-dard ke maron
Na ghabrao gunahgaron, na ghabrao gunahgaron ..
Aa rahey hain vo dekho Mohammad
Jin ke kaandhey pe kamali hai kali.

Then the world will call: You who are afflicted with grief
Fear not, sinners! Fear not!
Look, Mohammad is coming
With the black shawl on his shoulder.

Kash Purnam, dayar-e-Nabi mein
Jeetey-jee ho bulawa kisi din.
Haal-e-dil Mustafa ko sunaoon
Thaam kar un ke rozey ki jaali.

If only, Purnam, to the land of the Prophet
I may be summoned some day while I’m alive
I will open my heart to Mustafa
While clutching the screen around his tomb.

Bhar do jholi meri ya Mohammad
Laut kar main na jaaoongi khali.
